Professor Vincent Alaba Akinsete- A Quintessential Scholar and Gentleman
Our Professor Vincent Alaba Akinsete was a kind, intelligent, charitable and charismatic teacher and leader. A man worthy of emulation. He thoroughly impacted us in uncountable ways; from theoretical thermodynamics and fluid mechanics through the refrigeration and air conditioning design for large structures to professional practice. He was the Technical Secretary for the Nigerian Society of Engineers as well as a Fellow of the iconic Nigerian Academy of Engineering.
Professor V.A. Akinsete was a passionate teacher who takes more than cursory interest in his students and wards. I remember the consenting magnificence of Uncle Alaba, in the early days when I was a green horn at the Faculty Board of Studies and Board of Examinations in the Faculty of Engineering, University of Lagos. No unit course system at that time, it was almighty June. Students fate hang on the magnamity of the course teacher to adjust the marginally below 40% pass mark up to ensure that students meet the criteria for a degree. Professor Akinsete would always be on the side of the students.
Finally it is also appropriate to acknowledge that Professor Akinsete after retirement continued his interest in the University and in fact did donate the CAD/CAM design suite to the Faculty in 1995 thus putting a stop to T-square and drawing boards for the Training of Engineering students in Nigeria. He also contributed intellectually to our research studies on pipelines and fluid transfer.
